Cognitivism -
One learning theory that can be juxtaposed with video games is cognitivism. With cognitivism, the theory focuses on the processes involved in learning rather than on the observed behavior.
There are games that require individuals to work in groups or single player mode to get a certain task done--Lego Dimensions. Lego Dimensions offers multiplayer and single player mode that relies on gamers being able to use problem solving skills. The game relies on the process of solving a mission either by looking for clues or working together as a team.
The learners according to cognitivists are active participants in the learning process. The video game is action based/adventure that requires the gamer to interact with their environment by collecting pieces and fighting antagonists. Gamers quickly learn the controls because there are tutorials and quick time events that allows gamers to think quickly on their toes.
Gamers use various strategies to process and construct their personal understanding of the game content to which they are exposed. Learners have mental schemas, but they are only changed when they learn a new concept/idea/control from the game such as a new move, attack mode, or weaponry. Once they mastered new mental tasks they can move to the next level (expanding on old schemas from previous games/levels).
